I wanted pizza, but I didn’t want pizza, I wanted a calzone, but I didn’t want a calzone. I was in a mood where I wanted to eat something, but at the same time didn’t want it... anyway, I settled on this.
Ingredients and spices that need to be Make ready to make Stromboli:
- 1 Pizza Dough
- Hot Italian Sausage (6)
- Handful Mushrooms
- 1 Onion
- 1 Pepper
- 1 Egg
- 1 1/2 Cups Pepper Jack Cheese
- Black Pepper
- Seasoned Salt
- Onion Powder
- Garlic Powder
- Italian Seasonings
- Parsley
- Canola Oil
Steps to make to make Stromboli
- Allow pizza dough to come to room temp. Wash your veggies (No, not the onion) and take the skins off of your sausages. With a little bit of oil in a hot pan, add in sausages and break apart, followed by the onions and mushrooms.
- When the sausage is just about cooked through and the veggies are looking good, add the peppers. Cook a few minutes and remove from heat. Get a large sheet pan or pizza pan ready.
- Stretch your dough into a rather large rectangle. Spread a little more than 3/4 of your cheese on the dough. Top with your sausage mixture and leave a flap exposed. Don’t go to the edge with your filling.
- Prepare an egg wash. Brush the flap facing away from you and the two sides. Roll once, fold sides in, then wrap tightly. Should remind you of rolling a.... burrito.
- Cut three slits in the dough to allow it to vent. Brush entire Stromboli with egg wash. Top with cheese, being careful not to block the vents.
- Bake in a 400F oven for about 25 minutes or until golden and attractive. I made a sauce with 75% Marinara 25% BBQ sauce. Garnish with some parsley. Allow to cool a bit before slicing.
